The airport has been experiencing remarkable growth recently. With 48 nonstop destinations and more on the horizon, the airport is expanding air service to meet increasing demand. Airport Director Jesus Saenz noted the facility’s “strong growth at SAT,” reflecting San Antonio’s emergence as a major business and tourism destination.
To accommodate this growth, the airport is undergoing significant improvements. Construction began October 2023 on a Ground Load Facility expected to be completed by early 2025. This new facility will connect to Terminal A and feature three ground-loading gates specifically designed for ultra-low-cost carriers.

San Geronimo Airpark

Ever wanted to park your plane in your backyard? Well, that’s exactly what folks do at San Geronimo Airpark in Bexar County.
This little slice of heaven sits about 10 miles west of San Antonio, and it’s got quite a story. Back in 1981, some airplane-crazy folks decided they were tired of driving to airports. So they bought some land and built their own airpark. Took them years of hard work, but they did it all themselves.
Now it’s this cool community where you can literally walk from your kitchen to your cockpit. The runway’s about 3,000 feet long and in pretty good shape – perfect for small planes. They call it 8T8 if you’re looking it up.
What I love about this place is how tight-knit everyone is. The neighbors all share this same obsession with flying. Kids grow up thinking it’s totally normal to have a Cessna parked next to the garage. There’s even an EAA chapter that meets there, so you’ve got this whole community of people who get it.
It’s not fancy or anything, but for pilots who want the ultimate convenience and a bunch of like-minded neighbors, San Geronimo is pretty much perfect.

Seven miles south of downtown San Antonio sits one of Texas’s coolest airports – Stinson Municipal. This place has serious bragging rights as the second oldest general aviation airport in the country. That’s some real aviation history right there.
What makes Stinson special isn’t just its age though. It’s classified as a reliever airport, which basically means it takes pressure off the big commercial airports by handling general aviation traffic. Smart planning, if you ask me.
Here’s something you don’t see every day – it’s located right in the state’s only UNESCO World Heritage site district along the San Antonio Missions parkway. How cool is that? You can literally fly in and check out some of the most historically significant sites in Texas.
The airport goes by SSF (IATA code) or KSSF (ICAO), and it’s got everything you need for general aviation. But my favorite feature? They’ve got a Hike & Bike Trail that connects to Mission Reach. So you can fly in, tie down your plane, and go for a nice walk along the river.
It’s the perfect blend of aviation and Texas history all rolled into one awesome spot.

The FBO keeps regular hours from 8 to 5 on weekdays, but here’s the best part – they’ve got self-service fuel pumps that work around the clock. So whether you’re an early bird or flying late, you’re covered.
What really sets them apart is how they go beyond just fuel. Need flight training? They’ve got instructors. Want to rent a plane for the weekend? No problem. Looking for hangar space? They can help with that too. They even do discovery flights for people who’ve never been up before.
The whole place has this laid-back, family-friendly vibe where everyone’s genuinely happy to help. It’s exactly the kind of airport that makes flying fun and keeps you coming back.
